Oral Examinations
Regular oral exams give your dentist the opportunity to identify any oral health issues and make a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your exam, your dentist will take a close look at the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Exams may also include dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer can affect any part of the mouth or surrounding tissues. During your exam, your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums will be checked for any signs of oral cancer which may be difficult to detect with the naked eye.
Oral Health Care at Home
To keep your smile healthy between dental appointments, be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss at least once a day.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
Before or after your exam, your dental hygienist will perform a professional cleaning to help maintain the health of your teeth and gums and to prevent or manage gum disease.
The cleaning begins with a scaler to gently remove plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth and along the gumline. Next, a polisher is used to smooth the tooth surfaces and help remove remaining stains or plaque.
The appointment is finished with thorough flossing to clean between the teeth and support overall oral health.
